Jargon Busters

 

In Education there is a tendency to use acronyms when sharing both written and verbal information. The following list has been created to try to explain the meanings of some of the more commonly used acronyms.

Lockdown  Lockdown procedures are important and would be used in response to an internal or external incident which could be a threat to the safety of staff and children in the school. Examples of possible threats would be:
  1. A reported incident, disturbance in the local community
  2. An intruder on the site
  3. A warning being received regarding a local risk of air pollution (smoke plume, gas cloud etc)
  4. A major fire in the vicinity of the school
  5. The close proximity of a dangerous dog roaming close

PP

Pupil Premium (Additional funding available to schools to provide additional in school resources for children who have been entitled to FSMs. The PP allocation is spent either by providing academic support to boost attainment or as a means by which pupils learning or experiences in education may be enriched.)

PPA

Planning, Preparation, Assessment  (Time when teaching staff are out of lessons to plan and prepare lessons and activities and mark work)

Statement of Educational need (replaced by EHC)

SENDCO

Special Educational Needs and Disability Co-ordinator - a SENDCO is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the school's SEN policy.
