Year 3 - Food

Dear Parents,

As part of our topic work next half term Year 3 children will be learning about healthy eating.

Each class will receive 3 weeks of workshops on Thursday afternoons, led by parent volunteer Mrs Heidi James. Mrs James works for a food education social enterprise and has a Level 4 Award in Nutrition. We will learn about “everyday” and “sometimes” choices with a particular focus on limiting sugar and making choices which are good for our bodies and the environment. We hope your child will be inspired to try new foods and talk about good everyday choices.

Your child will get the most out of this programme with your help:


  • Please look out for handouts and discuss them with your child. For example at the end of the first session the children will bring home a drinks mat to remind them of everyday vs sometimes choices.

  • Repeating tastes from class - the children will have the opportunity to taste a range of healthy foods and will bring home a record of what they tasted. The more you can give them the chance to keep trying these foods the more likely they are to accept new healthy choices. The foods will include fruit, vegetables, healthy snacks and dairy. No meat and no nuts.

If your child has a food allergy, please contact the School Office and we can confirm that our records are current.

A parent survey will be sent out by email – summary information from this survey will be shared with Mrs James to help her prepare the workshops and assess how the children benefit.

To cover the costs of the foodstuffs we are asking for a voluntary donation of £2 -  please can this be sent into the School Office in a named envelope, with Year 3 food workshops written on it, by Tuesday 4th June.
