Last Tuesday 20th June, I took three Year 2 children, Lauren, Franklyn and Lola to the Big Science Event Final.
In the Spring Term, Year 1 and Year 2 completed a child led science investigation in teams. They carried out investigations they had planned themselves to answer a set question and then recorded their work on a poster. I then judged all the posters and chose two teams, one each from Year 1 and Year 2, to be put forward for judging at school by a representative from Science Oxford as part of their ‘Big Science Event’. Our Year 2 team were selected to take part in the final at Green Park conference centre in Aston Clinton.
This was a great achievement in itself as from 120 teams entered from 45 different schools in Buckinghamshire, only 12 teams went through to the final. Of these, only 2 teams were Infant School aged, the rest consisting of KS2 children.
At the final, the team had to give a presentation about their investigation in front of 3 judges and also children and adults from the other schools. They then had to answer some questions from the judges about the investigation. The children spoke extremely confidently and clearly and answered the questions very enthusiastically. I am thrilled to say they were named as joint runners up with 2 other teams! An amazing result!
I would also like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Donna Westall, our Chair of Governors who accompanied us on the day. Well done again to Lauren, Franklyn and Lola, we are all so proud of you.
