Curriculum Area - PE

Physical Education & Sport

At Chalfont St Giles Village School, we believe that every child should enjoy a range of experiences within physical education and sport. Through our extensive curriculum, extra-curricular clubs and other opportunities, we promote positive attitudes to health and wellbeing, the development of fundamental skills and a love for being active.

 

PE lessons

During physical education lessons, children follow personal learning journeys based on a fundamental skills, and multi-ability approach to teaching and learning – ‘Real PE’.  Our curriculum equips children with the essential abilities to maximise potential, and enjoy long-term participation in physical activity and sport.  Teaching and learning focuses on three main building blocks for every sporting action, these are known as Fundamental movement skills: 

 

  • Agility
  • Balance
  • Coordination

 

The curriculum encourages creativity, collaboration and self-challenge, through six themed units per year, known as ‘multi-abilities’ which include:

 

  • Personal skills
  • Social skills
  • Cognitive skills
  • Creative skills
  • Physical skills
  • Health related fitness

 

In Key Stage 1, using ‘Real PE’ children explore the multi-abilities and fundamental skills through songs, stories and personal best challenges.  Children begin to develop the notion of moving progressively through challenges until they reach the point of ‘failure’, then working collaboratively they ‘practice perfect’ until they can achieve consistent success – “that's when we know its time to move on to the next challenge” (Year 2 child).

 

In Key Stage 2, we use ‘Real PE’ to look at how fundamental skills can be combined, and their context in sporting activities.  Children experiment with the ‘How?’ and ‘Why?’ of combined skills, collaboratively and creatively exploring the most effective ways of practicing and performing more complex sporting actions.  “I chose to combine three different types of jumps in my sequence, a hop, a skip and a jump.  It helps me go further and higher without loosing balance” (Year 3 child).

 

Children consolidate and further develop their fundamental skills through a range of competitive activities, ranging from more traditional activities and games such as tag rugby, football, cricket, high 5 netball, gymnastics, dance and athletics.

 

Change 4 Life club

Change 4 Life is a national initiative aimed at getting both children and adults to:

Eat well. Move more. Live longer.

We run a ‘Change 4 Life’ club to increase children’s physical activity and wellbeing, whereby a group of children from our junior school lead a club for a group of children at our infant school.

The junior children lead fun activities, which fit into four categories (target, combat, flight and creative). They have a huge bag of equipment, which is exclusive to the club, and are able to choose what activities they do during the session. For example: archery, bowling, cheerleading, javelin, skipping, blindfolded pair work and many more!

This is a great opportunity for children to:

  • Participate in a new type of sports club that is all about moving and having fun rather than competing against others
  • Lead and take ownership of a club – they create the activities themselves
  • Increase their self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Most important of all – have fun!

 

Wake and Shake

We have introduced 'Wake and Shake' at the infant and junior school. This is a simple routine set to music that we do as a whole school for five minutes every day. We do this after lunch to wake us all up ready for the afternoon's learning - both children and staff! The easy-to-follow routines are set to popular songs that the children are thoroughly enjoying. Each year group takes it in turns to choreograph and lead their own routines for the rest of the class. When the weather is nice we do this on the playground too!

 

Sports Leaders

At the Junior School we have a fantastic scheme called Sports Leaders, whereby year six children plan and lead a club for four weeks. So far the teams of Sports Leaders have run a variety of clubs for year three and four children including: tag rugby, netball, gymnastics, badminton, circuits, football, basketball and dance. This is an opportunity for children to learn valuable planning, organisation, communication and leadership skills.

 

Buckinghamshire School Sports Partnership

We have joined a cluster of over 40 primary schools in Buckinghamshire that is run by Dr Challoner’s High School. Our level two membership gives us access to:

 

  • (Level 2 benefit) Specialist PE teaching staff with a wealth of experience who will work alongside our teachers to improve PE teaching. We will be specifically focusing on the improvement of our gymnastics teaching across the school, as a specialist gym teacher will work alongside teachers in every year group. The culmination of this will be a whole school gym festival in the summer term.
  • A network of schools for continued professional development opportunities and shared good practice
  • A wide range of sports festivals at a competitive level to increase children’s participation in national school games competitions
  •
