Curriculum Area - French

Mrs J Quainton is our French Curriculum Leader for 2017-18.

Learning a foreign language increases cultural awareness and understanding, as well as developing useful communication skills for life. At Chalfont St. Giles Village School, we teach French as our foreign language across Key Stage Two. Following guidance from the National Curriculum, we develop children’s skills through weekly lessons delivered by the class teacher, culminating with a French Residential in Year 6, which allows the children to use the language that they have been learning.

At Chalfont St. Giles Village School, we aim to:

  • Increase children’s understanding of French culture – their way of life, clothes, cities, buildings, food;
  • Increase children’s understanding of life in France during WWI;
  • Increase children’s ability to use written French to communicate, including the use of cognates;
  • Encourage children to attempt French phrases – in both oral and written form;
  • Provide children with the opportunity to speak French in France.

Our new Learning Journeys have been designed to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum and ensure that there is a progression of skills as children continue through the school.

Learning Log homework may also feature French work, allowing children to drive forward their own understanding in this area.
